There are 2 Councillor vacancies on Ilminster Town Council which the Council would like to fill by the process known as co-option.

If you are interested in serving as a Town Councillor, please download  the documents below or Tel 01460 52149 or email: [email protected]  to request an application pack.

The Town Clerk should receive applications on the official  form no later than noon on Monday 10 June 2019. The application may be made sent by post (addressed to The Town Clerk, Ilminster town Council, The Council Offices, North Street, Ilminster, Somerset TA19 0DG  or by email to [email protected]

The co-option timetable is:

  • Week commencing 13 May 2019 – Advert for 2 vacancies published
  • 10 June 2019 noon, Closing date for receipt of completed applications
  • 18 June, starting at 7.30pm Council meeting at which each applicant will be invited to make a short presentation and answer questions

To qualify to serve as a Councillor, a person must

  • be a British subject or citizen of the Irish Republic,
  • be over 18 years of age and an elector,
  • must reside within the parish of Ilminster, or within 3 miles of it, or occupy as owner or tenant any land or premises therein, or have their principal or only place of work there, and
  • must not be disqualified from holding office as a Councillor.

Grew up In South Somerset, family roots go back to early 1900’s.  Moved back in 2003 after a career  spent in Criminal Justice settings.  Set up the award winning Community Justice Panel.  Elected to South Somerset District Council(SSDC) in 2015,  currently chair of Area West committee and elected SSDC Leader from 1 September 2018.  Retains a keen interest in Restorative Practices.  A committee member at Vaughan Lee Care Home, Ilminster Fairtrade Committee and represent the Town Council on Ilminster Literary Festival Committee and Chair of Partners and Communities Together meeting.  Very keen to see Ilminster develop in a sustainable way for future generations.

Although born in Dorset, I have been resident in Ilminster since 2003.  Our greatest challenge as councillors is the ongoing withdrawal of the Rate Support Grant which is bound to put our services under pressure.  I fully intend to make every effort to defend them.

Lived and worked in the Ilminster area for over 65 years.  Owned and managed the Shrubbery for 52 years.  Educated at Ilminster Boys Grammar School and University of Surrey (previously Battersea College of Advanced Technology).  Has been and remains a member of many organisations in the town; mainly service or sports clubs.  Past National President of the National Association of Round Tables in Britain and Ireland, Past Master of two local Masonic Lodges, currently President of The Somerset Cricket League and Ilminster Cricket Club.  Chair of Governors of Wadham School and busier in retirement than when working!

I have been associated with the town for over fifty years and have lived in Ilminster for over forty.  A schoolmaster by profession, I have had a life- long interest in education; P.T.A. and Chair of Governors at Greenfylde, Chair of Governors at Swanmead and, at present, Chairman of I.E.F.
During my approximately fifteen years on the council I have chaired the Open Spaces Committee and risen to the dizzy heights of Mayor.
I continue to care about the town and look to support any measures which will enhance the life and well-being of its citizens.

Interests include: theatre, art, music and getting out and about to explore my new surroundings here in the SW.  Passionate about supporting wildlife, access to countryside, young people, the homeless and our local community groups.

I was born and brought up in Yeovil and moved to Ilminster in 1990.  I have worked for various companies doing accounts work, 35 years of these are within the construction industry.
My interests are in securing our open spaces for the future and enjoy walking our lovely Herne Hill and surrounding fields and cycle path.  I became a voluntary Walk Leader for SSDC walking for health scheme and started a walk in Ilminster in the summer of 2016, now with of further volunteers, we have two walks in the town for different levels of fitness.
I studied later in life to be a dog trainer and behaviourist and do this now as a hobby, other interest past and present are Martial Arts, Dancing, Motor Sport – Rallying, Reading and Genealogy.
