About Us

Ilminster Town Council has 15 councillors who represent the community. Full Council Meetings are currently held about every six weeks in the chamber at the council offices in North Street.

In addition to these meetings the council also holds regular meetings in the areas of Finance and Policy, Planning, and Open Spaces also on Tuesday evenings.

All meetings are open to the press and public and usually start at 7.30pm.

The Town Council has a number of functions such as managing the cemetery including internment procedures and recording of burials, looking after open spaces from the recreation ground to the canal and Herne Hill, as well as maintaining and providing play facilities, providing and maintaining street furniture, handling taxi licensing, and responding to planning applications on a consultative basis.

In addition to this the council also acts as an important channel or platform for local people’s views or concerns that are outside of the town council’s responsibility so they can be passed onto the relevant local authority i.e the district or county council who look after that area.

The Town Council is the lowest tier of local government and closest to the public and has the ability to make a significant difference to the quality of life in the community it serves.
