Market House, Planned Essential Maintenance Works

Work has started on essential maintenance to the Market House in the centre of Ilminster. The work, which will cost almost £12,000, will include some re-pointing, shot blasting the guttering, rewiring and replacing lights and decorating the ceiling. The Town Council will also be refurbishing the seats that are situated close to the Market House.

Whilst access to the Market House will not be possible during the work, the weekly Thursday market will continue. The market traders have agreed to limit the space they use and will all be located on the East Street side of the Market House. The work is scheduled to take approximately 2 weeks, weather permitting.

The Mayor, Councillor Rose Neave said “As well as being of historical interest, the Market House is a focal point for modern life in the town – being used throughout the year for community events such as the Victorian Evening as well as markets and fundraising activities so it is important that the building is well maintained. We are aware that the work will cause some disruption for traffic and pedestrians but care will be taken to minimise that as far as possible and we hope that people will be tolerant and supportive of the need to for the work to be done..”

Note for Editors:

  1. The Grade II listed building which was gifted to Ilminster Town Council in 1975 was cleaned and painted in 2009 but the last major maintenance work was in 1982. It is believed the building in its current form dates from the early 1800s
  2. It is possible to take photographs of the Market House, surrounded by scaffolding.
